Robert McConnell was born in Woodford County, November 17, 1818, and is the third son and only living child of James and Elizabeth Viley McConnell, natives respectively of Fayette and Scott Counties, Ky., but of Maryland born parents. James McConnell was a representative in the early history of this county and died in 1857. Robert McConnell was reared a farmer and at the age of sixteen became manager for his father, who was in ill health. In May 1848 he married Miss Mary E., daughter of William T. and Eliza Peters Thompson, natives of Woodford County. To this union six children have been born: Eliza, Martha, William T., Robert, James P. and Elizabeth, Mr. McConnell has a fine farm of 720 acres. He is also president of the State Bank of Woodford, at Versailles, the successor of the branch of the Commercial Bank of Paducah, which was established some fifty years ago, its first president being David Thornton. The branch was discontinued in 1871 and was succeeded by the Commercial Mutual, with D. Thornton as president and E. K. Thornton as cashier. In 1873 David Thornton died, and was succeeded by A. L. Berry. In 1876 the Woodford Bank supplanted the Mutual. Mr. Tuyman succeeded Mr. Berry and Robert McConnell took his position in October 1879. The authorized capital is $80,000, with $15,000 surplus. Its present directors are S. H. Robertson, Lister Witherspoon, Dr. G. W. McLeod and John S. Moore. In October, 1880, David P. Roab became president. He is a native of Lewis County, was born in 1831, and is the son of Joseph and Rebecca Roab.
