[31735] Per "North Mountain Shadows and London Road History," page 24, Alexander McConnell was shot at by Indians while plowing a few days before the Ft. McCord massacre in 1756. A bullet lodged in his plow handle. Alexander escaped into his cabin while his brother, 17 years old, was captured. The brother, I believe James McConnell, escaped from the Indians during the Bloody Run Battle. Another reference to this event is in Churches of the Valley, by the Rev. Alfred Nevin, published in 1852 and available as a free download at Google Books.

Alexander McConnell married either a sister of Robert McConnell's or the sister of Robert McConnell's wife. He later he married one of his daughters so he was both a brother-in-law and uncle to the children of Robert McConnell.

On 4 Mar 1765, he was a witness to will of John McCamey a tanner in Letterkenny Twp. Other witnesses were Robert McConnell and Joseph Culbertson.

Per Pennsylvania Land Warrants and applications, he applied for 50 acres along with William McConnell who purchased 300 acres in Peters Twp, Franklin Co., PA on Sep 1, 1766.

Per Campbell website at: http://campbellgenealogynotes.wordpress.com/
Patrick Campbell had land in Peters Township as early as 1767, probably earlier. In the Pennsylvania Archives, V. II, Edited By William Egle m.d., Pub 1894, pgs 384-385, 395 we find 3 caveats filed where Patrick was claiming various surveys were interfering with his land. Two were filed in the Land Office on 2 Feb 1767 against Alexander McConnel and another bearing the same date against Robert Wilson. On the 26 May 1767, he filed another claim against Samuel Robb. Samuel Robb is mentioned in the above linked survey.

On 23 Aug 1769, he was a witness to will of John Willson, Letterkenny Twp, yeoman. He died Aug 1773.

A Patent to Robert Elder and Alexander McConnell in 1765 by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania:
"To All to whom these presents shall come. Know Ye that in consideration of the munies paid by Robert and Mary Elder in trust, and Alexander McConnell, for the Warrants hereinafter mentioned and of the sum of fifty-five dollars and twenty-two cents in full since paid by Nicholas Keefer, into the Treasury office of the Commonwealth, there is granted by the said Commonwealth unto the said Nicholas Keefer, a certain tract of land situated in Hamilton Township, Franklin County, adjoining lands of John Bossart, John Eatten, John Hindman, Abraham Keefer, heirs of Andrew Marshall, heirs of James Hindman, containing 239 acres and 24 perches, which said tract of land was surveyed in pursuance of two warrants, one dated 20 Aug. 1765, and granted to the said Robert Elder and Mary his wife in trust, and the other dated 27 March 1788, granted to the said Alexander McConnell and the right of the said land became vested in the said.

March 1, 1776. Whereas Alexander McConnell does wish to take up one hundred and fifty acres of land including an improvement adjoining lands of Andrew Marshall, George Matthews, John Hindsman, and John Buzzard and his other lands in Hamilton Township. ... Interest to commence from the 1st day of March 1776.

On 8 Apr 1776, he witnessed the will of Jordan James, Letterkenny yeoman. Jordan James died in May 1776.

On 22 May 1789, he witnessed the will of Thomas Dougherty in Hamilton Twp. Thomas Dougherty died in March 1790.

1790 Census, Hamilton Twp, Franklin Co., PA
2 M 16+ (Alexander, William (son-in-law)).
2 Females (wife, Rosana (daughter)).

Will Book A, p 248. Will of Alexander McConnell, Hamilton Twp
Written 5 Sep 1791, proven 22 Aug 1792. Legatees: Wife (not named) to have 4 pounds, six shillings yearly for her maintenance; Daughter Roseannah wife of William McConnell; Granddaughter Elizabeth McConnell; Alexander McConnell eldest son of William McConnell my deceased brother; My wearing apparel to be divided between Samuel Patton, my brother, and my nephew James McConnell of Letterkenny Twp; Residue of estate to my grandson Alexander Erwin. Exec: Friends Samuel Patton and James McConnell. Wit: John McConnell, Robert McConnell, Robert McConnell Junior.
(Source: Franklin County, PA Wills, as recorded at Chambersburg, PA).

There are a couple of mysteries related to this will:
1. Witnesses of Alexander McConnell's will were Robert McConnell and Robert McConnell, Jr. However, the only Robert McConnell known to be alive and over 21 was the Robert McConnell who was the son of the Robert McConnell who died in 1777. So who was the other Robert McConnell?

I believe he may have been the Robert McConnell mentioned in the will of Robert McConnell (d. 1777) who married Jane McConnell, Robert McConnell's (d. 1777) daughter. He doesn't appear in any censuses, although he may appear in some references and have been confused with another Robert McConnell. If he did not own land, he could be easily missed by censuses and have been relatively invisible.

2, Who was the brother Alexander McConnell referred to as entitled to the wearing apparel? I think this may have been a James McConnell who lived in Franklin Co., PA. This could also have been the same Robert McConnell who was the witness. The closest group of non-related McConnells to the family of Robert McConnell (d. 1777) of Letterkenny Twp lived in Hamilton Twp and would probably have been related to Alexander.

Per a Beers History of Franklin County, Samuel Patton was a captain in the Revolutionary War who served under Colonel Joseph Armstrong. Captain John McConnell, Alexander McConnell's brother-in-law, was another captain under the same Colonel.

Sep 12 1812, Nicholas Keefer purchased Alexander McConnell's land in Hamilton Twp, Franklin Co., PA.

Letters of Administration, October 1, 1774
"Be it remembered that on the twentieth Day of October 1774 Letters of Administration were granted to James McKisson of the Goods & Chattel to Rights & Credits which were of the Estate of Alexander McConnell Deceased Inventory & Acc't to be exhibited in the Time appointed by Law. John Armstrong"
