William MCCONNELL

[26181]

MAY 1835 - ____

Family 1 : Ada _____
  1.  Walter S. MCCONNELL
  2.  Maggie M. MCCONNELL
  3. +Edmund Clark MCCONNELL

INDEX

[26181] Per the 1850 census, Columbiana Twp, Gibson Co., IN, William was born in Ohio in 1836, probably in Ross Twp, Greene Co., OH. He appears in the 1840 census in Columbiana Twp. as a male 5-10. In the 1850 census he was 14 years old, born in Ohio.

He probably lived with his father in Shelby County, IL in 1860 and that census record could not be found.

William may have been in the Civil War. Based on the birthdate of his first child, he married soon after the end of the Civil War.

Since there is a gap of 20 years, there is some uncertainty about whether this is the same person as found in the census found in 1870. However this record, and the one found in 1880, match in every respect all known facts and no other record was found that also matches.

In the 1870 census he was in Vinton Twp, Benton Co., IA, b. OH in 1840, his wife Ada, b. IL 1846. He had $800 in real estate and $100 in personal assets. His children were Walter, 4, Maggie 3, and Clark (later called Edmund Clark), 1.

In the 1880 census, Vinton Twp, Benton CoElk Twp, Benton Co., IA. He was born in Ohio in 1837 and both parents were born in Pennsylvania. The fact that his wife was born in Illinois hints at the possibility he moved to Shelby County, IL with his father about 1855 and later he married there. An Illinois marriage record could not be found in the state index.

In the 1900 census, Elk Twp, Benton Co., IA, he was living alone. It shows he was born in May 1835. It shows he could not read or write, which was true of his brother Jacob McConnell as well. He owned his own home. It shows him and both parents born in Ohio, but everyone around showed the same thing and I doubt if this is accurate.
