[17191] Owned a tannery at log #43 in Lexington. James was shoeing a horse when he got word of the siege at Bryant's Station. He was one of the footmen who went to their aid, but when they arrived the gates were closed and they couldn't get in. He was on his way back to Lexington when he was killed by Indians. He was buried by Roger's Gate beside the road.

This resulted in a case that was decided in the United States Supreme Court in 1827.
