John C. CONNER

[44327]

1825 - 26 FEB 1864

Family 1 : Elizabeth L. RINEHART

INDEX

[44327] John Conner's Civil War Record:
Residence: Fountain Green, Illinois
Enlistment Date: 15 Aug 1862
Rank at enlistment: Private
State Served: Illinois
Survived the War?: No
Service Record: Enlisted in Company A, Illinois 118th Infantry Regiment on 07 Nov 1862.
Mustered out on 26 Feb 1864 at Port Hudson, LA.
Sources: Illinois: Roster of Officers and Enlisted Men

While John Conner died at Port Hudson, he didn't die during the siege of Port Hudson, which was from May 21 to July 9, 1863. However, he may have died of wounds that he could not recover from.

History
The cemetery is located on the site which was the main battleground of the Siege of Port Hudson, during the American Civil War. Nearly 4,000 Union troops fell during the fighting, and most were buried in the cemetery, many as unknowns. After the war another 8.4 acres (34,000 m2) was appropriated to inter those who died in the local veterans' facilities. The Confederate soldiers who died were primarily buried in the trenches where they fell. There is however, a Confederate Cemetery in the Port Hudson area that is currently inaccessible to the public.

The battlefield at Port Hudson is one of the only naturally preserved Civil War battlegrounds. The breastworks, gun pits, and trenches remain today almost as they were during the battle. The area has never been developed.

Port Hudson National Cemetery was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1974 as part of the Port Hudson Historic Site.
