John McConnell's father, William, died in 1772. On May 8, 1790, John McConnell
John married Mary Dobbins, daughter of John Dobbins Sr. and possibly his first cousin. John, Alexander, William Jr. and Archibald lived in the neighborhood of Little Dutchman, Hunting and Rocky creeks along the South Yadkin River.

Per a Court Record:
1790, May 08 Court: John McConnell, orphan of William McConnell, being of lawful age, chose David Woodson his guardian. Security: James Brandon.
John was a minor when William Sr. died, and silversmith and land speculator David Woodson, a neighbor, and James Brandon became his guardians and continued so until at least May 1790, although John came of age around 1780. He served in the Revolutionary War until 1781, when he came back to his mother's home.

witness to the children's affidavit, in1854 John Dobbins (or Dobyns) a nephew of soldier's widow was of Murfreesboro, TN.
