INDEX

[18739] Jonathan McConnell was born about 1825 in Greene County, PA. His family is listed in Greene County, PA under William McConnell in the 1830 census.

By 1840 this family moved to Morgan County, Ohio where McConnelsville is located. This family is distantly related to the founder of McConnelsville. Listed next to William McConnell, Jonathan's father, were several Woorkman families. They must have known each other since Jonathan McConnell is next listed next to a Worrkman family in Coshocton County in the 1850 census.

Jonathan McConnell and his wife Mary Jane Haney were married in June 21, 1849 in Coshocton County, Ohio by Judge S.C. Burrell. They are listed in the 1850 census in Tuscarawas Township, Coshocton County, Ohio as John McConnell, age 22, b. OH, and Jane, 20, b. OH., along with a son named Samuel W. McConnell, b. 1850.

John McConnwll was in the 1850 census, Coshocton County, Tuscarawas Township, married to a Mary Jane McConnell, both born in Ohio. He was 22 years old, a laborer. She was 20 years old. They had a child, two months old named Samuel McConnell. Since the census was done in June, 1850, the son would have been born around March of 1850.

On April 10, 1857, according to court records, "John McConnell, Jacob McConnell and John Smith did unlawfully play together at a certain game for money." The witness against them was Joseph W. Morrison, who in the 1860 census was a farm laborer living in Cold Springs Township. John McConnell is referred to was John W. McConnell in many of the records. Bail was provided by John W. McConnell, Moses Spurgeon and Wesley King. Moses Spurgeon lived near Jacob McConnell according to the 1860 census. Wesley King is listed immediately after John McConnell's family in the 1860 census. Wesley King was age 71, from Virginia and held property of $1,470 and had personal assets of $600 in the 1860 census. John Smith may be the John Smith in the 1860

In the 1860 census, Shelby County, IL, Cold Springs Township, John McConnell is listed as "Jno"-- Jonathon McConnell, age 33, a laborer born in Ohio. His wife is Mary J. The census shows he owns no real estate but did own property worth $200. His wife is Mary J., age 31, born in Ohio. His first son is Samuel McConnell, age 11, born in Ohio. He has a daughter, Malona McConnell, age 4, born in Illinois and a son, Jacob R. McConnell, age 1, also born in Illinois.

McConnell, a descendant of William McConnell through his son Jackson McConnell. This match give near certainty of a common ancestor within very few generations.
