First Generation
I. NICHOLAS COGAN of Chard, county Somerset, England, married one
whose name does not appear, and became the father of three sons.
Second Generation

2. THOMAS COGAN of Chard, married Elizabeth, a daughter of -----
Fisher of county Somerset., and became the father of two sons.
Third Generation
i. Thomas.
ii. Philibert, (3).
3. PHILIBERT COGAN of Chard, gentleman, born circa 1563, (as he
was sixty years of age when the Visitation of Somerset was made in
1623), married Ann, daughter of Thomas Marshall of Downton, County
Wilts, by whom he had and became the father of one son and six
daughters. He died in 1640 or 1641, as his will of Feb 10, the
former year was proved April 12, the latter. An abstract of that
instrument follows:
To the parish church, twenty shillings.
To my son Thomas Cogan one gold ring, or ten shillings.
To Mary Ludloe, my daughter, one gold ring, or ten shillings.
To Elizabeth Endecott, my daughter, one gold ring, or ten shillings.
To Martha Holway, my daughter, one gold ring, or ten shillings.
To Margaret Cogan, my daughter, three hundred pounds.
To Ann Robinson, my daughter, one gold ring, or ten shillings.
To Susan Cogan, my daughter, one gold ring, or ten shillings.
The rest to Ann, my now wife, whom I do make and ordain sole
executrix of this my last will and testament.
To my son Thomas (sundry moveables) after the decease of my said
wife. If he die without issue my daughter Susan shall hold and enjoy
my closes of land, meadow and pasture (described).
If William Cogan, my cousin, do discharge my said executrix of all
such bonds, bills and obligations as I do stand bound with and for
him unto Mr. John Barcroft and Margaret Webb, widow, then I do give
and devise unto him my said cousin William tthe sum of fifty pounds.
I desire my good friends Mr. John Hody, gent., and my son-in-law
Mr. Peter Holoway to be my overseers of this my last will and testa-
ment. (Register Evelyn, 40).
To the poor of the town of Chard twenty shillings.
