He appears to have enlisted in the Civil War as a 2nd Lieutenant, Co., I, 118th Infantry. He died, but his service record is almost completely blank. His Civil War roster record says "Dead, not mustered." A look at the history of his unit shows that the unit was organized starting in August 1862. This would mean he died about a year before his unit was organized. It could be he was in another unit and was to be transferred to the 118th as a 2nd Liuetenant but could not be because he had died.
His tombstone says "died in U.S. Service."
