In the 1820 Census, Richland Twp, Guernsey Co., OH, Thomas Richey was near James McConnell. Thomas Richey is the most probable father of Matthew's first wife Jane Richey.
I believe that for the 1820 and 1830 census Matthew McConnell was living in the home of William McConnell, Sr. in Wills Twp, Guernsey Co., OH. Evidence of that is that in the 1830 census for William McConnell, Sr. there was a daughter under 5 and also a new female appeared who was age 20-30 (Jane Richey, who married in 1826). In Matthew's 1840 census he has a daughter 10-15 and a female 80-90-- Susannah, widow of William McConnell, Sr.
1840 Census, Seneca Twp, Guernsey Co., OH.
1 M 30-39 (Matthew), 1 M 5-9 (Fletcher).
1 F 80-89 (Susannah - wife of William McConnell, Sr.), 1 F 30-39 (Jane Richey), 1 F 10-15 (unknown), 1 F 5-9 (Margaret Jane), 2 F 0-4 (Melissa & Mary Eleanor).
1870 Census, Van Buren Twp, Monroe Co., IN. Matthew was 70, a farmer, b. OH, with real estate worth $10,000 and personal assets of $1,150. Living with him were Luther, 22, b. OH, Harvey, 20, b. OH, Isabel, 18, b. OH, Matthew, 15, b. OH, and Sarah A. 10, b. IN. There were markers indicating that both his father and his mother were of foreign birth.
