There is a family tradition that John B. McConnell was a Captain in the Revolution around Philadelphia and received 1,000 acres for his service. However, since he was he was born in 1775 and the Revolution ended in 1783, he was too young to be in the Revolution. There is often an underlying truth to family stories. It is possible that the family is related to Captain Matthew McConnell, who was a Captain in the Revolution and who did live in Philadelphia, and who did receive 500 acres of bounty land for his service. A person who retold stories about Matthew may have thought that the captain referred to was John B. McConnell and a family legend was created.
1800 Census, Moon Twp, Allegheny Co., PA. Note: he was at the top of the page and his father was five lines below him.
1 M 16-25 (John), 1 M 10-15 (unknown), 4 M 0-9 (Phillip, Alexander, 2 unknown who died young).
1 F 26-44 (Susannah).
John B. McConnell claimed land in the summer of 1807. Below is a copy of John McConnell's application for a land warrant in 1818, which was the origin of what became the McConnell Farm. The application states that John B. McConnell had been living on the land since the summer of 1807. The McConnell Farm is supposed to have been started in 1797. The 1797 date is a small exaggeration, but after 200 years, any way you look at it, it is certainly true that the McConnell Farm has been in existence for a long time.
