Elizabeth HOAGLAND
One source states the birthplace for Elizabeth Hoagland was in Ohio, while another states it was Virginia. Both wives of Josiah Shipley had the name "Elizabeth", so there was most likely some confusion as to where Elizabeth Hoagland was born. Josiah Shipley's 2nd wife, Mary Elizabeth O'Rourke was born in Virginia. Marji Turner claims Elizabeth Hoagland's birthplace was in Ohio. Here is her argument...
The forward on Moses Hoagland (1774-1850) shows one piece of evidence of him being in OH as early as 1804. Note that he and his wife Elizabeth (mother of Elizabeth who married Josiah) were born in VA.
Older brother of Elizabeth Hoagland Shipley, Moses Porter Hoagland born in 1812 is found in Herringshaw's Encyclopedia of American Biography, pg. 485. It gives his place of birth as OH. The 1850 census in Millersburg, OH also lists his birth as OH. Admittedly one other source states he was born near Baltimore, MD which doesn't make sense to me. Given the other evidence, I don't think it is correct. Also Pliny, who was born before him was born in OH.
Elizabeth's younger brother Willis - the 1850 Census lists his birthplace as OH.
Pliny Hoagland, another brother - his obit and the 1870 & 1880 census records - list his birthplace as OH. His obit states he was born near New Philadelphia, Ohio July 31, 1810. This same information is listed in a document titled Indiana Legislature pg 185. So that is two older brothers and a younger brother that were all born in OH, but I'm not through yet.
In a bio on Henry Shipley, it lists Moses Hoagland, Pliny & James as prominent men and his (Henry's) uncles. This is in Centennial History of Licking Co. OH 1876 and the copy is stamped The State Library of Ohio. This is great documentation to tie Elizabeth to 3 of her brothers and by default Willis as his obit lists one of them - Pliny, I think it is. Pliny, by the way, is the one we have documentation on in his obit states his parents were Moses and Elizabeth Hoagland. I also located Arod Aaron Hoagland b. 1808 in the 1850 census listed as being born in OH. I found one census on Elizabeth - also 1850 - unfortunately the birth state was not readable.
From Marji Turner: "Shipley information sources frequently state that Elizabeth (Hoagland) was from Virginia, which is incorrect. She was born in Ohio. It may be that she was confused with Josiah's 2nd wife, Mary Elizabeth O'Rourke, who was also called Elizabeth and was from Virginia."
Marriage place was either , Tuscarawas County, Ohio, United States or , Holmes County, Ohio, USA.
