Notes for JAMES PURDY, COL.:
James Purdy may have come to America with his father, but the father has not been identified, yet. There were
several Purdy families in PA and in Cumberland Co at the same time as James. He fought in the Indian Wars and
in the Revolutionary War and he had the title of Col James Purdy.
He outlived four sons, James, who drowned in the Juniata River at about age 25 years. John, who died in 1798 at
age 18 years. William died at age 25 yrs. and Hugh died at age 23 yrs, both John and William killed in the battle
of St. Clair's defeat in Ohio in 1791.
On 12 May 1810, a statement in estate papers of John Purdy, Sr. refers to $100 allowed for two years boarding of
Col. James Purdy. Virginia Regan says "we do not know with whom he was boarded nor, indeed, where he lived
as we have not found him in a census that we could identify beginning with the first census of 1790."
