William soon left for Cassville where he kept hotel for his cousin William S. McConnell and worked as a druggist, but he also served in a Union Army unit from Christian Co. He remarried to Betty Forrester Brown after Sylvia's death and lived in Stone Co., MO. In 1881, he was director of a school district east of Hurley known as Walnut Grove.
