1790 Census, Washington Co., PA
2 M 16+ (James, William his brother), 1 M 0-15 (William).
5 Females (Janet, Mary, 3 unknown).
Immediately next to James McConnell was James Cunningham, James McConnell's father-in-law.
This census does not match the children recorded for James. However, it is not clear what happened to Alexander McConnell who is listed immediately after him in 1800. If you combine the children, they match what was recorded for James. I think James later adopted Alexander McConnell's children. I have distributed the children recorded for James between the two households in 1800. I have no idea which children belonged to which household.
1800 Census, Smith Twp, Washington Co., PA
1 M 26-44 (James), 1 M 0-9 (James).
1 F 26-44 (Janet), 2 F 0-9 (Anna, Jane).
1800 Census, Smith Twp, Washington Co., PA
1 M 26-44 (Alexander), 1 M 16-25 (William), 1 M 10-15 (Robert), 2 M 0-9 (unknown, there was an Alexander who died in 1799).
1 F 26-44, 1 F 0-9 (Martha).
1 female child, Mary "Polly", age 18, is not included. She may have been working outside the family.
They moved to Belmont County, Ohio, in the fall of 1806 and purchased the NE quarter of the section of land which his brother Alexander had purchased from the government in 1805. In the 1806 and 1812 list of Ohio taxpayers, Wheeling Twp., Belmont Co., Ohio. He may have stayed on the PA side for a while.
1820 Census, Wheeling Twp, Belmont Co., OH. James may have been in a hospital or something like that in 1820. He died in St. Clairsville in 1823. Jane McConnell is listed as the head of household.
1 M 26-45 (Possibly William),
1 F 45+ (Jane), 1 F 16-26 (Ann).
